How Much Does It Cost to Publish a Book?

You have seen answers online from '$0' to '$20,000.' Both are technically true and totally unhelpful. Here are the real numbers, piece by piece.

Editing — the big one

A professional edit usually runs from about $500 to $3,000 depending on the length of your book and how much work it needs. This is the one place you should not save money. Readers and publishers can forgive a plain cover; they never forgive sloppy writing.

Cover design

A good cover runs from about $200 to $2,500. Somewhere in the middle — around $500 — is where most professional covers live.

The smaller bills

Formatting the inside of the book: up to a few hundred dollars. An ISBN, if you self-publish in print: about $125. Printing is usually nothing up front — it comes out of each sale.

The honest total

A truly professional self-published book usually costs between $2,000 and $5,000. A do-it-yourself version can be close to free, but it rarely competes on a shelf. And remember: traditional publishing flips the whole table — they pay you, not the other way around.
