How to Write a Book People Want to Read
Writing a book is not magic. It is a craft, like baking. A few simple ideas make almost any book better. Here are the five we use every day.
Start on the very best page
Readers give a book one page, sometimes less. Do not warm up. Start where something happens. If your first page is slow, cut it — the book usually starts right after it.
Know who you are writing for
A book for everyone is a book for no one. Picture one reader. What do they want? What will make them stay up late reading? Write for that person.
Keep one big promise
The best books are about one clear thing. If you cannot say what your book is about in one sentence, the reader will feel lost. Find your one sentence first.
Writing is really rewriting
No one writes a good first draft. Good books are made in the second, third, and tenth pass. Cut everything that does not serve your one big promise.
Do not do it alone
Every famous author has helpers — editors, readers, honest friends. Asking for help is not cheating. It is how good books get made.
